WELLINGTON NOTES.

[B'kom Ou* Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, May 26. \ Mr Robinson, chief clerk of the Stock Department, will leave for Dunedin to-night in charge of the live stock from th© Government famis to be exhibited at the Agricultural and Pastoral Show . in Dunedin. Th© problem of how to live on hfiUlV a-crown a week is being solved by n young man, th© adopted son of an old lady. This young man made a most favourable impression on th© trustees of th© Benevolent Institution this afternoon. "What have you coming in?" asked the chairman (the Rev W. A. Evans) of th© applicant. " Two pounds a month. That's mother's pension," was the reply. " What do you pay foj rent?" was the next question. "Seven and sixpence, sir," replied the appli-' cant. "We live on half-a-crown a week." The trustees found on close investigation that th© youn^ man., story was accurate in every particular, and that he was living with his mcthet in a house that was damp and dark, and that ought to be condemned. As a consequence of these conditions of life, it was stated at the Board meeting that th© applicant was a victim to rheumatics, for which he was being treated at the hospital. Ac an outcome th© Board decided to continue rations and to mako rent allowance iv order that th© young man And his mother might move into healthier quarters.
