The Star of Japan is a comparatively new steamer, launched in 1906 from the yards of Messrs Workman, Clark and Co., Belfast. She is a steel singlescrew vessel of 6236 tons gross and 4000 tons aet register, and it 440.3ft ia length, 55.8ft in beam and 30.3ft in depth of hold. She has triple expansion engines, of 601 horse-power nominal. The Star of Japan is commanded by Captain F. W. Ulyatt, who is weD known in Lyttelton. He is an experienced and skilful navigator, and has for twelve years commanded ocean liners without a mishap.
