FIRES.
SUSPECTED INCENDIARISM. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 23. Incendiarism is suspected in connection with the outbreak of fire at the residence occupied by Mr Mills, collector of Customs, Newmarket, on March 15. Tli© premises have been under close observation by the polic,e, and at 3 a.m. yesterday Constable Hunt arrested Thomas Fitzgerald, for twentythree years gardener at the house, on the charge of oausing another fire, wluca was then commencing. The Newmarket brigade extinguished the second outbreak, after damage amounting to £50 had been done. When arrested Fitzgerald is stated to have had two candles and some waste in his hands, while his clothing smelt of kerosene. ASHBURTON, March 23. A five-roomed house at Stave-ley, owned and occupied by Mr G. S. M'Rae, was, together with its contents, totally destroyed by fire early this morning, the occupants barely escaping. The house was insured for £150 and the furniture for £75, in the' State Office.
