PREPARATIONS FOR A SEND-OFF.
On the understanding, based upon the best of grounds, that the Nimrod will be able to leave Lyttelton on New Year's Day, arrangements have been sketched out for the sending off of the expedition. On Saturday the Harbour Board will entertain the officers, scientific staff and crew of the vessel, and a large number of citizens have been invited to be present. New Year's Day will, however, bo the " big occasion," as might be expected. T?he proceedings will probably commence in the morning. The Bishop of Christchurch will conduct a short service during the forenoon. The expedition will start at 4 p.m., and the Nimrod will be accompanied down the harbour by as many vessels as can leave the wharf. If possible, arrangements will be made for the Ninfrod to yev c saluted by the forts as she passes down tha harbour. In all probability a luncheon will be tendered to the officere at 1 p.m. on. the day of departure.
