SIR JOHN STRACHEY
United Press Association — By Electric ' Telegraph.— Copyright. , (Received December 21, 7.43 a.m.) LONDON, December 20. Sir John Strachey, formerly a meander of the Council of India, is dead. (Sir John Strachey was born in 1823, kind was educated at Hailebury College. m He joined the Bengal Civil' Service in 1842, and. after filling various offices in the North-west Provinces was, in. 1862, appointed Judicial Commissioner of the Central Provinces. He became president of the Sanitary Commission in 1864, Chief Commissioner of Oudh in 1866 and a member of the Council of the Governor-General of India in 1868. pa the death of Lord Mayo, in 1872, Sir? John filled the posi- , tion of Acting- Viceroy for some time. In 1874 he was appointed LieutonantiQovernor of the North-west Provinces, jand .two years later succeeded to the poeitjon of financial member of the-Go-vernor-General's Council. He returned Home in 1880, and from 1885 to 1895 served as a member of the Council of India.)
