The Elvaston. for whom the New Zealand Shipping Company is agent, is bringing 1857 tons of cargo for Lyttelton from America. ■In a series of voyages between Liverpool and Montreal the turbine steamer Virginian averaged 17.2 fc> 17.65 knots per hour at an estimated f power of 12,700-i.h.p. The average coal consumption for' the turbines, worked out at 1.30 ib per i.h.p. .The 'first large American turbine steamer, the Creole, recently left New York on her (naiden trip to> New Orleana. The Creole is one of three' vessels of the same size and typa built by the Fore Biver Shipbuilding Company, but is the only one to be fitted with turbines. She is- 440 ft long and 10,000 tens displacement. She steams 18J knots %n hour with a cargo of 4500 tons, has 152 staterooms and accommodation for 250 . steerage passengers.
