CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. . FIRST DAY. ■The racing carnival will bo commenced tomorrow, when the first day's racing, in connection with the Canterbury Jockey Club's | Spring Meeting, will be he.d at Riccarton. ; Judging from the numher of horses now ] gathered at the course, there is every reason to anticipate large fie-lds throughout the four days of ths meeting, and ih& racing should provide plenty of excitement, the issue .in the chief events being regarded as particularly open. Xiie sixteen horae3 still claiming engagements in the New Zealand Cup have all raced sinoe the weights appeared, nine of , them having been successful. The topweight, Maniapoto, though he is improving, ' may not be quite ready for a severe raoo yet. Master JJelaval. on the other hand, I is in good heart, and since his arrival at Riccarton he has accomplished a lot of solid work. He is one of the few horses in the field tha<fc has proved his ability over two miles, and he is certain to be very dan- ' gerous. Zimmerman has little form, public or private, to recommend him for a race like this. Parilutu. the veteran of the field, who will be making his third appearance in a New Zealand Cup, has not been giving entire satisfaction in his training gallops, and he will have to improve on his recent ■ displays to win. Armistice is an uncertain ; performer, but if she runs one of her best ' races she should be very handy. Mahuta ! may be troubled by the distance, and Grand Slam's track displays have not suggested j that he lms much "chance. Gazeley has done one or two gallops at Riosarton, but his prospects do not look bright after his effort on Thursday. Apa and Frisco, who are in tho same ownership, have been doing well since they reached Riccarton, and they both look like proving hard fco beat. Elevation, the only three-year-old left in the race, is getting through some attractive woTk on the tracks. On the form nhown at meetings held in the North Island this season, he should go very close to winning, provided, of omuse, he can stay and there seems no reason at present to doubt his ability in this direction. BuccleucK despite his staunch advocacy by Bomo good judges, is likely to be beaten long before the erd of two miles. Probable, Lapland. Astrakhan a.nd Saga can. on publio form, have but moderate prospects of success. The quartet that may have most to do with the finish are Elevation. Master Delaval and the stable-mates. Apa and Frisco. The Stewards' Handicap the principal snrint race of the meeting, is very open and looks like providing a fine contest, the chances of about a dozen of those engaged beinsr held in high esteem. Special interest will attach to tie We'come Stakes this year, as tho inclusion in the field of Armlet, who ran a first and a second at Randwick last month, will enable a comparison to be drawn between the Australian and New Zealand two-year-olds. The following is the programme for to-morrow's racing: — ,

dashed over half a mite on the gTass in 603P0, and D« Witte traversed ft mile . ** three-quarter speed. Don Orsino and Helianthus ran five furlongs, while Uennku, Formative and The Rand, together, put in threequarter pacing over five furlongs. Astrakhan app' ared to more advantage than Notua in a spin over five furlongs, the last half-mile of which occupied 51sec. Black Reynard and Faro fenced proficiently over two flights of hurdles, and subsequently galloped a mile on tha plough in lmin 49£ sec. Firedron (James Pine) brushed over half a mile in 43sec. and Outlander (F. E. Jones) ran fiva furlongs, the '»st half-mile of which occupied 52seo. Probable and Gwendo.ina spurted fcur furlongs, and King Billy (H. Price) dashed over a similar distance in 49sec. _ I*e | Beau and Sen Sim were well matched in a ' strongly-run six furlongs, which occupied lmin 18 2-s?ec, and Buccleuch (Scoullar), aa- ; sisted by M«ry of Argyle over the last six ; furlongs, galloped a mile in lmin 43 2-6 sec, : a pleasing performance. The Cup horse ap- I peared to- oe slightly lame when walking I back to the sheds, and after being ! rubbed down he was showing un- j mistakablo signs of soreness, but it is i hoped that it is only of a temporary nature, j Frisco and Apa traversed a mile at three- j quarter speed, while BaUara-t and Anna- j men to, separately, performed sprinting tasks. | The following torses were giv«a half to Bteady pacing:— Mahuta. G-o'.dbeater.. Cockleshell, R<hJ -Rain- Diamond Star. St Aldan, , I Zimmerman, Guidwrfe, Chrysoprase, Pc- i i trovna, Fandango, White Cockade, Graf ton ] 1 Loch. Master Delaval. Medallist. Sir Tris- | tram, Moriarty. Muskerry. Jolly Roger. Dawn, j Rose Noble, Sir Artegal, Grand Slam, The S«e*, Grand Stand, Alexis and Maniapoto. Gazeley, who wrenched a shoe off during his gallop yesterday, compassed two circuits at half -speed, moving sorely. *vhile Tirole, . Prim. Idealist. Lard Soult and' Asteroid, . separately, performed useful tasks. After breakfast nothing of importance was 1 done, half to steady paomg being practically all that was accomplished by the horses out exercising. Replete, Nttma and Full Rate, who arrived yesterday, weie out. '4. hey all look well. Buccleuch is unfortunately .amiss, and will probably be scratched for all engagements ! at the meeting, while Maxtello is an unlikely starter in the Stewards' Handicap. The Victoria Racing Club's meeting will :be commenced to-mo-rrow. Pose'don should add another to his long list of successes by winning the Melbourne Stakes, and Mounj tain King should have no difficulty in win- ■ ning the Derby. Welcome Txist and Master ; Foote being the next best. Several of the horses engaged in the Ma-ribyrnong Plate have already won races, and Kuban, who ran i second to Miss Bass in the Debutant Stakes at Cauifield, may run well. The betting market is very quiet to-day. For the New Zealand Cur>. Master Delaval is a firm favourite at 3 to 1 and Elevation is quoted at 4 to 1, these two being the only horses inquired about by backers.
