CHARGE OF ASSAULT.
♦ TERMINATION OF A RACE DAY. Last night Detectives Bishop and Ward arrested Edward Pritchard, a second-hand dealer, of Victoria Street, on a charge of having assaulted his wife, and wounded her with intent to do bodily Inarm. Britchard and his wife had been out to the races at Riccarton yesterday, and shortly after their return home a dispute regarding money transactions began. The story told by Mrs Pritchard to the police was that between seven and eight o'clock Pritchard had attempted, to cut her throat. He had seized her by the throat and had attacked her with a knife. She struggled and screamed, but Pritchard cut her about the face and severed the sinews of the wrist. Dr Irving attended her and at once ordered her removal to the Hospital, but it is thought that the injuries sustained by her will result in the loss of the use of her thumb. Pritchard was taken before Air V. G. Day, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning, and was charged with the .offence, but on the application of Detective Chrystal he was remanded to August 21. Bail was allowed in one surety of £50 or two of £25 each.
