LAND SETTLEMENT IN FIJI.

United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright (Received July 17, 9.28 p.m.) LONDON, July 17. In the House of Lords, at Lord fctanmore's request, Lord Elgin, conlented to present to the House correspondence respecting the sale of land n the provinces of Rewa and Naitasiri, Fiji. Lord Stamnore expressed a fear tfiat it would be possible, under a refcent ordinance that the authorities, by Hie acquisition of land for public purpcGes, would deprive the Fijians of the whole of their lands. Lord Elgin replied that the Governor of Fiji was still bound to protect the interests of Ihe natives who were unable, owing Eo declining population, to cultivate all the land available. It was the duty of the Government to take all steps to promote the settlement of the Islands and increase the population. Lord Elgin expressed a belief that the correspondence would satisfy Lord Stantoore.
