THE STATE OF IRELAND
» . DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyright. LONDON, June 6. The. House of Lords has been engaged two days debating the condition of Ireland. ■ • Irish peers produced testimony of increased lawlessness and terrorism. The object of the anti-glazing agitation was' to force sales of land at prairie value. Lord Denman's remark that cattledriving was not' a crime of a very serious nature was severely criticised. The Earl of Crewe explained that Lord Denman did not intend to minimise such criminal disorderly acts, but merely argued! that driving was less j serious than maiming. Lord Crewe heartily agreed with the Marquis of Londonderry that vindication of the ; law ought never to be regarded as a party question. He admitted that severe watchfulness was necessary, adding that the Government relied on ordinary law. The Marquis of Ripon declared that the Government had determined to put into operation all the powers of law it possessed. The "'Daily Chronicle" says that 1 Fjord Denman's remark was not very judicious, and driving may be used very effectively as a means of intimida- j lion, and lead to serious disorder. i
