CHRISTCHURCH CLUB. JUDGES. Poultry.— Mr J. Casey (Wellington)— Leghorns, Mmorcas, Vaneiy Bantams and Hamburgs. iMxK. Keiiiy (Dunedm)— Lsaig.-huus, La* Kings, Indian Gam&, Anconas, Andaiueians, bpanisn, J^iyniouth hocis, Old English. Game, JUrahnias, Houdaus, Waieriowi, Turkeys, Variety Classics, .\ovice C;as=es. Mr J. Aiaude (bydney.)— Alcdern Game-, Game liu.L.iuiu.b, Yryajiiiw-iteb i<uu Oipinjtwiib. Pigeons. — Mr J. Maude (Sydney) — Fancy vane.ie3. Mr A. C. Gerard (Uimstckurch)— "Working- Homers. Canaries and Cage Birds.-rMcssrs G. B. Eitckie and-W. H. Taylor (QhrifHcliurch). j The ChristcJiurch Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Club opened its annual etiiow at the Colosseuui yesterday undor circumstances tnat were, on the whoie, favourable to the succces of the undertaking. The afternoon attendance was small, but in the evening large num, bera visited the building, and the receipts were quite satisractory to the cluo. The chief drawback to the opeiir I ing was that some of taie anost import* ' ant sections of the show were unjudgI ed, and cannot be judged until to-day. Mr J. Maude, of Sydney, who was apponted judge of Wyandottes, Orpingvoms, Mouern Game and Game Dantarns, and all fancy varieties of pigeons, is a passonger by the steamer Molcoia, from Sydney, and the delay of the vessel made it impossible for nim to arrive i yesterday. It was unfortunate that such a trouble should iiave occurred, for the show is in many ways qualified to be classed with these that have done mucn in tne past to give the Christchui'ch Club a most enviable reputation. The number of entries is very large indeed, totalling lti^ti, and tne arrangements for tne show are excellent. Tne officers and members of tlie club have done a grea^ deal of hard work in connection wicii tlie undertaking, and they may well be satisfied with ihe buoo^ss that has attended their eitorts. A word of praise is aue for his careful oversight to the secretary, Mr A. Hamy, who is managing his first show since he took office, and managing it very woil indeed. Seme of the laa-gest classes in the (show are among tiicee which will he judged to-day. In. one of the \Vyandotte classes there are fifty-five entries, the largtsb number, it is said, that has ever been received far one ciass in the colony. There are large classes also in o'th©r sections, and the judges had a very heavy day's work yesterday. There was fair competition in Langetiana, and the chief prize-taker was Mr W. Henderson (Duneam), who showed a remarkably fine occkerel. In large elapses of Minorca'? Mr D. Hampton (Christchurch) obtained a cup and special prizes for the best cockerel, and Mr J. H. Hopkins (Westport) won a special prize with his hen. Leghorns are a most popular breed with fanciers aa well as with the more purely utilitarian breeders, and in many of the classes the competition was very keen. For the White variety the chief honour, a club challenge oup for the best cockerel or pullet, went to Mr C. Luoas (Christen arch). Mr A. Montgomerie (Palmerst&n North) obtained a similar honour for his Brown cockerel, and Mr T. C. Field (Christchurch) won a challenge cup with his Buff cockerel. Mr P. Jack (Christchurch) and Mr J. Bates (Dunedin) were the most ccn6picuous exhibitors of B-ack and Rcsecomb Leghorns. Andalusians were j quite as good a class as usual, and Mr "W. Scoon (Rangior-a) scored a great series of successes. Brahmas are diminishing year by y&ar, and though eomo gcod birds were shown by xnree exhibitofrs, the judge did not award the challenge cup offered for competition. Mr W. A. Sowman (Blenheim) w-as the most successful exhibitor of Plymouth Rocks, and Mr T. Breeze (Aehburton) made a fine record in Houdans. The chief prizes, for Ejamburgs went to Mr G. Knowles (Stirling), and Mr S. Y. "Wearing (Wakaouaka) and Mr A. R. iMpe (Wellington) also found a place of honour in the lists. Mi* E. J. Jones (Ashburton) took all the first prizes for Anconas. In the class for "any other variety," Mr C. Smith showed some fine specimens of the little-known Faverolles breed, and considerable interest was taken in a pair of birds of the Silky breed, quite the most fantastic of the
poultry ehown. Bantams seem still i appeal to fanciers, and the number < exhibitors of the dainty little birds w& quite as large ac U6ual. Chjef amon them were Mr C. G. A. "Wray (Oan aru) and Mr J. Lacey (Christchurch Ducks of four varieties were very we represented, Mr J. Mouat (Dunedii and Mr S. Avery (Ballance) being th most successful exhibitors. Two per of poultry that attracted a great det of attention were the Silver Wyar dottes and White Leghorns with wliie Mr W. A. Nrjon won laying oompet: tione at Linoodn and Blenheim. Anoth-e exhibit sent only for exhibition wa that of Dr S. Hodgkinson (Invercai gill). It comprised four typical speci mens of the Scotch Grey variety, one c the ancestors of the familiar Plymout Rock. The only pigeons judged yesterda were the flying homers, a group o about two hundred birds, fully repre uentative of a popular section of th pigeon world. There was very little t choose between numbers of the exhibit in many of the classes, and taken al through, the birds shown typified tlrei claes admirably. Mr J. Porter (Christ church} and Mr F. Kingeford (Christ church) gained the greatest number o prizes. Fully a hundred birds were in ducted in the show of canaries, am cuifility was well renresented. Mr J. T. Brice (Christchurch) had a remarkabli run of success, winning the three chal le'ip-e cups and four special prizes offer ed for canaries. The show will be reopened at tei o'clock this movnin.fr, and will remnh cmon -.nil r?j>v and a train to-morrow. Mi Maude will undertake his judo-ing n< S'"on B(? he arrives in Chriirf-fhurch. nn r the remits will be announced as quickh a« rtppfsible.
