TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
AUCKLAND RESOLUTIONS. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 21. The Trades and Labour Council after a discussion of the question of whether industrial arbitration has been beneficial or otherwise to the workers of New Zealand, decided to instruct its delegates to the Trades and Labour Conference that the Auckland Council is of opinion that the Act as it stands had been of benefit to the colony. The Council approved of a remit to the Conference urging the Government to increase the import duty on all printed matter by at least 25 per cent. The platform adopted by the Labour candidates at the municipal elections includes rating on unimproved values; power by initiative to demand a vot_ on any policy proposal ; better sanitary maintenance' or back streets; municipalising the sanitary service ; municipal markets for fresh fruit and meat, and a depot for the sterilisation of the city's milk supply; workers' homes, and a speedy demolition of insanitary dwellings ; and a Union wage to be fixed for all employees of the Council.
