AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL

INTERCOLONIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. This afternoon the first part of the Axemen's Carnival wae held in tho sports ground, beginning at 2.30. The officials were Messrs J. F. Grierson (chairman), G. H. Mason, E. Nordon, C T. Aschman and W. G. Atack ; starter, A. Hansen (Eltham); stewards, Messrs T. C. Stanners and T. O'Reilly; handicapper, F. E. Hardy (Eltham) ; and secretary, E. J. Righton. The following records are recognised by the New Zealand Axemen'si Association as being the best times authenticated for the different events in com- . pliance with the rules to* be observed in registering records : — December 31, 1904— New Plymouth, C. W. Casey, 18m standing chop; lmin 45seo. December 27, 1903— Eltham, D. Pretty, 18in underhand $ lmin 45sec. September 15, > 1904— Eltham, C. Hutton, 2ft •standing; Smin. September 15, 1904— Eltham, 0. Casey, 2ft underhand; 4min 14sec. November 9, 1901— Eltham, J. Pettitt, 2ft S.H. sawing; lmin 18sec. December 26, I*3o5 — Eltham, Casey and Pretty, 2ft D.H. sawing; 23 l-'ssec. December 27, 1905 — Eltham, Vo-lzke Bros., Carson and M'lntosh, 22*n D.H. sawing; 17 8-ssec. December 26, 1906— Eltham, D. Pretty, 2ft standing) chop; 3min 34 3-ssec. The various events were conducted under the rules of the New Zealand Axemen's Association, and any competitor not the holder of an axeman's license was liable to be disqualified. The following was that, programme : — 2.30 p.m.— Event No. I—Maiden1 — Maiden Chop. 3 p.m. — Event No. 2 — Maiden Double-handed Sawing Championship. 3.30 p.m. — Event No. 3 — Underhand Handicap, first heat. 4 p.m. — Event No. 4 — Underhand Handioap, second heat. 4.30 p.m. — Event No. s—Underhand5 — Underhand Handicap. The various events were watched with the keenest interest by a large crowd of spectators, who had gathered in the sports ground, and a programme of items contributed by the Be&see o'-th'-Barn Band added much to the enjoyment of the carnival. The carnival is a representative one, entries having been made from New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia.
