THE SEASON.
RAIN WANTED IN MID-CANTER-
BURY
[From: Otir Correspondent.]
ASHBURTON, October 13. An exceptionally dry season is being experienced in this district. _ No rain hr.s fallen for fully a fortnight, and not very much then, Farmers and pastoralists are consequently beginning to cry out for more miosture. At nearly every meeting of the County Council there are applications for water raoe services, and the Council will have to face in the near future some extended scheme to enable it to supply these demands. Yesterday a strong north-east wind was blowing all day, and this morning it had veered round to north-west, bringing up clouds of dust and making things very disagreeable. So far the pastures are looking well, on account of the moisture in the ground, but the land which is being worked for nape or turnips is turning up very lumpy, which only rain can remedy. At the present' moment there is no sign of rain.
