THE STAMP DUTIES.

AN INTERESTING CASE. [Per Pkess Association.] ! NAPIER, September 17. An interesting . point in the matter of the stamp duty came before the Court to-day, when W. M. Newman w«b. charged with failing to stamp a duplicate receipt. The defendant, entering a plea of guilty, said that he was totally unaware that a duplicate required stamping, and such a thing was unheard of .in local business circles. The Inspector of Police said there was no reason to doubt that the original was 6ta.mp.ed, but the Department considered, that duplicates also should be stamped. Subsequently the defendant withdrew the plea of guilty and entered one of not guilty, to enable the Magistrate to go into the question thoroughly. -——-——
