The' city suffered from earthquakes in 1822 and 1851, was bombarded by a Spanish fleet in 1866, and during the civil war of 1891. after a great three days' battle fell into the hands of the insurgents, when looting and incendiarism cost the city nearly two million dollars. The population when the last census was taken was 133,000.
