LOVERS' TOKENS.
Of «11 the gifts that & xvoman receives from the beginning of her life to the end, none come .in for that inspection and criticism that are bestowed upon the presents seleoted for her by her sweetheart. He blunders, of course, this lover who would like to buy everything for his lady-love, bus who has to be content with comparatively little, and it is not always that his fiancee can hide her disappointment, and keep from him his error. It may be that she is rather too severe, for the fault may be not in the gift at all; but, having, perhaps, expected something else, she is rather inclined to resent a substitute. Yet, after, all, these disappoint) ■)? gifts are few and far between, and Lore still remain the many which ar; to her, be her age sixteen or sixty, endowed with special powers to charm. The old grandmother will ofttimes guard , almost sacredly the first gift received in those days long ago from the shy lad who was to become her life's partner. And what engaged girl does not look upon her sweetheart's presents with special feelings, because she hears so often of the love which prompts the giving of these gifts? They are to her as symbols, and whilst her lover is away, perhaps, very far distant, they seem to her to be links that chain them to each other, in spite of the miles that stretch between. The circumstances surrounding the giving of each and every gifc can again be remembered when a young brideelect is collecting her own little possessions to send them off to the home that is to be here in the future. No matter how trifling, not one would she leave behind j even those which were disappointing at the time have grown dear, and are cherished far beyond presents that carry the blessing Of other good wishers.
