Mr T. E. Robson, honorary secretary of the Canterbury Boxing Association, received a pleasant surprise last week by receiving from the Timaru Association a case of Loewe pipes. Accompanying the gift was a note from Mr G. Kerr, honorary secretary of the Timaru Association, who wrote that the present was "a reminder of our first boxing competition. The committee and myself are deeply grateful to you for the interest you displayed and the assistance you so willingly gave on our behalf." The average person connected with amateur sport gives his time and services without any thought of reward, and when a little memento does come his way it is all the mere highly appreciated from being unexpected. Sporting Club, Sydney, on July 3 was full of • sensation. The New Zealander commenced operations in his wellknown hurricane fashion, and at the close of the first round Thompson looked in a bad way. In the second and third rounds Thompson evaded most of Griffin's rushes, and getting in a number of telling hits more than once had Griffin in Queer Street. The fourth round saw botlh men used up. Griffin, however, recovered the quicker and began to gain the upper* hand, finally outing his opponent early in the tenth round. The match between Frank Tfcorne (who recently so sensationally defeated Charlie Griffin) and Ned Murphy (whom Griffin had previously defeated) for the feather-weight championship of Australia took place at the Gaiety Theatre, Sydney, on June 30. It was a contest full of incident, and lasted into the fifteenth round. Though Thorite was mostly the aggressor Murphy put up a great fight. The West Australian, however, was too strong and hardy for his opponent,' and in tihe fifteenth round the police stopped th© the referee deciding in favour of Thome. Hock Keys, the accomplished Australian light-weight, gained a points win over Young Erne in a six round bout, at Philadelphia on May 22. Decisions are not allowed in the Quaker City, hut the Press accorded the honours to tihe Australian, who was subeequently' matched to meet Jimmy Britt in New York on June 16.
