HAPHAZARD DEATH CERTIFICATES.
■.' ♦ • POST-MORTEM EXAMINATIONS, i [Faoac 0u» Corrkspondent.T ) DUNEDIN, July 6. The frequency with which Coroner Graham dispenses with post-mortem examinations, when medical men cannot definitely state the cause of death, has induced the "Star" emphatically to protest against * a continuance of this course. Expert; opinions have been elicited on the fbinti and a prominent local doctor says that it has always been held that a medical man should in no case give a certificate of death from heart dieease-^especially in respect of persons at or about middleage' — without being fully satisfied on the point. To give a certificate on a mere view of the body, without getting such history of the patient as would indicate imperfections in the heart, such' as rheumatic fever, or certain troubles of the internal organs, is guessing, and bad guessing, for it has been shown by authorities that the majority of sudden -deaths, at least in middle-age, are not due to heart disease.
