LAWN TENNIS.

NOTES.

(By VOLLEY.) The Linwood Club has made a number of improvements to the 'courts in view of the. championship meeting to be held there at Easter by the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. With six courts in splendid order the tournament should be got through easily on the dates set down in th\s programme. Entries have already commenced to come in,and secretaries of cluba are reminded that March 31 is the last day for receiving entries for handicap events. If would be of decided assistance to the Association if an energetic official in each club would make it his ' business to induce as many of his club players to enter as possible. Each club stands in the position of partly guaranteeing! this notorious overdraft, and' it will be to the benefit of all if an. energetic attempt is made to' wipe it of! by a successful meeting- at Easter; The question of including the courts of the United ■ Lawn Tennis and Bowling CL\it> in the Exhibition 'has been favourably consider-, ed •by Cabinet, and legislation will beintroduced during Ihe coming- session to carry this into eff-: The Canterbury iiawn Tennis Association will then be in a position to charge admission for the New Zealand and Australasian, championship meeting, and any fear -of taking the tournament in hand for fear of financial loss is dispelled; in fact, very sanguine delegates are talking- already of that unknown quantity uip to the present, a credit balance. The New Zealand and Australasian championship programme wa,s before the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last week, with amendments suggested by the NW Zealand Association. Several alterations' were m*de, and it has been submitted again to the governing body. • The New Zealand Association stood oui for a new financial arrangement in oonneotion with thft New Zealand meeting to b» held in Christchurchj by claiming 60 per cent of the profits, with no share in the loss. A mild protest from the local Association "had no effect, and the Canterbury Association, confident that this big tournament will return a handsome profit, agreed to the terms. The New Zealand Associa-tion has now come into lin& with, most aports' proverning bodies over the receipts for a Nsw Zealand championship m»eting. A correspondent asks whether in a fourhanded game the server in one gam© is compulsorily the striker-out for the first service from th« opposing side. The order of receiving the serric* is optional to those receiving, but when once the arrangement is made and the set begins that ordtr must be preserved until the end of the set. There is no rule to oompel the server m one game •to be first striker-out in the succeeding game. For example, in the case quoted by my correspondent the lady served first, and it was quite permissible for her to take the left side of the court and receive the second service, but she is not allowed to change from that side until the end of the set. Then tho gtfm» starts anew. Any new arrangement may be -made by the partners in the game. Different sides may be taken for receiving tho service, and either may begin to serve; but one» the order of sides and service is arranged no change may be made until the and of' th» set. , Norman Brookes found it impossible to make the trip to Sydney for the interstate match,- so many who looked forward to the "meeting between him and Dr Sharp wer« disappointed. The Victorian team consisted of R. Heath, jMHirphy, Blair, Barnard, Hewitt and Chrisp. The South Australian championships will be. played in Adelaide at the close of the interSteta match with Victoria. The New Zealand chamoion, H. A. Parker, who holds the ohampionship of South Australia, will again put in a claim and defend his trfc!«. It is. probable that h» will meet Norman Brookes in the challenge round, as' that player is considered certain to make one of the Victorian team to visit Adelaide. .The Wellington Olub and the Thorndon Club are together in the lead for the Wellington Association Senior Shield tournament, and as both are likely to win the 'remainder of their matches they will probably have to play off at, the end of the round.l Th« New South Wales Association offered to 'pay all travelling and hotel expenses incurred by Misa Gyton. the Victorian lady ohampion. if »he would play in tho Sydney tournament. They were anxious to see a match between her and Mrs Payten, the New ■gfouih Wales champion^ but Miss Gyton had to decline the offer owing to the fact that it ■would interfere with her studies at tho Conaervatorium^of Music.. Th« Avonside Club has been pa.rticu]ar.y unfortunate lately in losing some of its most prominent players, and now the club champion A. Sollar, is removing to Hawera. He has 'attained his present position by determined and systematic . practice, and thorouerh1t deserves the success he has attained. His club will mis* his advices, and it ia to be hoped that "he will get opportunity for practio« at Hawera. .
