The Geraldine Mounted Rifles were inspected in camp to-day by Colonel Bauchop. He will inspect the Lyttelton Naval Artillery Cadets in their . camp this evening. The Engineers and No. 5 and No. 7 Companies of Garrison Artillery will attend a church parade at Lyttelton oa Sunday. Long service medals will h*» presented by the officer commanding the district. The Wellington correspondent of this paper telegraphs : — The .Minister of Justice intimated to me this morning that he ha_ now under consideration the question of extending juvenile courts, and hopes that practical results will follow from the same before long. The Sumner Gala, which will be -_.___. to-morrow, promisee to provide a very enjoyable day's sport and pastime. Record entries have been received for all competitions, and the motor launch, • race should be a most interesting y event. The s.s. Purau will be tbe flagship. At the meeting of the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board thia., morning the chairman stated that the Board's accident insurance Ijolicy for . ita employees had expired. The policy had been issued by the Commercial Union. Since that time the government had entered into competition, and it was for the Board to decide whether the policy should be transferred. Mr F. Horrell said that he thought all public bodies subsidised by the Government should support the Government office. Mr J. Wolfe seconded the motion. The Minister of Defenoe has accepted the service of a defence cadet corps at ihe Ashburton High School. v Captain TEJdwin's weather forecast telegraphed at noon to-day is as follows :—" Moderate to strong northerly winds. During December last the medical staff of the Wellington Hospital dispensed to patients 51830z of wine, . ~ valued at £3 13s 4d; 1618o_ of brandy, valued at £3 4d; 148oz of whisky, "valued at £1 6s, and 44 pints of ale, valued at £1 10s 3d. . v_ At the Oamaru Police Court to-day, Edward Joseph Reid, a young married tian from Ashburton, was admitted to ..137 months' probation on a charge of embezzling moneys collected as a canvasser for an insurance company. He was ordered to/refund the amounts and pay costs. The case of Cecil Ward, a laa of fifteen years, who had been remanded from Monday on a oharge of using obscene language, was again before the Court. Mr Keddell, S.M., said it was not a case for probation, and sentenced the lad to a month's hard laWur in Dunedin Gaol. Ward the previous day was convicted of drunke'nnees and discharged. The ways of the advertiser are eometimee curious. At this morning's meeting of the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board the following telegram wa6 read from the proprietor of a certain patent food : — " Chairman, Charitable Aid Board. Why don't you feed your poor little orphans on , and brighten and lengthen their lives, instead of dressing them in ' Punch and Judy' costumes, and adding to their misery by trying to? get them to exist on the Trust's very hard, dry products." The telegram was ordered to lie on the table, after some heated remarks from Mr G. B. Chiok, who pharacterised the sender as an " arrant
