Mr Sands', the worthy grocer and provision dealer, had something on hie mind, and when closing-time came hegravely contemplated his smart assistant. . "John," he said, "I owe about £500." "Yes, sir," said the smart John. "And I have about £300 in the •safe. Xha^op is almost bare of stock, and it seems to me that this is about the time to fail." "Yes, sir," said John, " it does 6eem rather like that." "Yes; but I must have some sort of excuse to offer my creditors, you know.". ' . ' "I s'pose it is necessary, sir," said John. : "It is. Now, you?ve got plenty of brains. Just see if you can't think out some decent, plausible excuse by to-morrow morning, wiS you?" - John promised. .The nest morning arrived— but John didn't. Then it struck Mr Sands that he had better take a look at the safe. Alas ! so far as money was concerned, it was empty ; but in its place Mr Sands found a note. "Dear Sir," it ran, "I have. , taken the £300, and am off to America. This is the best excuse I can think * of l for you to give your creditorß." >
