FIRE IN A POST OFFICE.

A NARROW ESCAPE. [Per Press Association.] TIHaRO, July 22. A" fire was discovered by one of the employees about six t>' clock this morning in the telephone room at the Poet Office, v under the main tower. The alarm was quickly given and the fire promptly subdued. Many of the telephone and telegraph wires were fused by the heat, this. being the chief damage done. The telegraph lines were temporarily disconnected, but the telephone service will be disorganised until Monday. The fire is said to_ have originated through a gas stove in the telephone exchange, which had been left, burning, becoming overheated and caai&ing the surrounding woodwork to eatoh fire. Had the alarm not been promptly given, the whole building would have been destroyed.
