CANTERBURY TRIAL MATCHES.
The first trial mafcn of the season, in view of the meeting of the Canterbury and New Zealand teams on Thursday next, will be played at Lancaster Park to-morrow afternoon. The selection of trial teams has been freely criticised by those who generally profess to know more than the selectors, but the inclusion of five Ashburton representatives in the teams is very generally applauded. It is anticipated that the trial game will provide some interesting football by no means inferior to that usually seen at such fixtures. During the progress of the Senior competition, which closed on Saturday last, the estimation of form has been rendered difficult by the apparent uncertainty of almost all the teams engaged in the competition, but this does not necessarily mean that the Canterbury team will be a weak one this season. Individual players have stood out prominently, and in spite of the drain on the province caused by the visit of a New Zealand team to Great Britain, there are indications that Canterbury's elect will form a solid, if not brilliant, combination.
