PREVIOUS NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITIONS.
INTERESTING NOTES. It is interesting to learn that tlie exhibition held in Hagley Park in 1882 was opened on April 10 and closed on July 15, and during its fourteen weeks of life it was visited by 226.300 . people. It was used for a poultry show, a flower show and a dog show, and several balls and other functions were held in the buildings. The Dunedin Exhibition, held in 1889 and 1890, occupied twelve acres and a half of land, ten of which were covered by buildings. The buildings were mostly plain, and the only attempt .at anything like architectural display was confined to that part of the building; which formed the frontage at the main entrance. The most prominent feature was a dome of artistic outline, which was 80ft high and 50ffc in diameter. The Government gave a grant of £10,000, for which it received some concessions in reprard to free space, and there was a credit balance when the exhibition was closed of £1379. Tn the erection of the build' ing, 3.000,000 ft of timber was used. 60T000ft of glass, 20 tons of nails, 1200 casks of cement. 80 tons of iron, 25 tons of lead, and 330 tons of galvanised iron. There were 1571 ' pictures in the art gallery. The building erected for that section was 100 ft square, and it was .divided into sub-galleries. The space allotted was found to be quite inadequate for the large collection of pictures received, arid many of them were hung in the different courts. On the opening day, there was an attendance of 17,521 people, and on the closing day 18,431 people were present.
