The Blackball Coal Company has • written to the Greymouth Harbour Board protesting against the special rate of 3d per ton of coal being levied on it and other private companies, whilo' the State mine goes ecot free. It appears ihat a special rate is leviable under the Greymouth and Wesipori; Harbour Boards Act, and is for the purpose of providing interest and sinking fund, and cannot be used for any other purpose. For some three years post the private companies have been paying the rate, but since tbo State mine entered the field of competition the Government refused to pay. the charge. The Board's solicitor -advised the Board that it cannot enforce the charge against the State mine. Mr Guinness, M.H.R., said that when the Bill was before the House it was distinctly stated that no advantego would be taken over private individuals, yet this was now being done. It wsjb decided to 'bring the matter under the nottco of ihe Government, a resolution being passed "That this Board recognises the justice of the com-, plaint by ilhs Blackball Company."
