THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS.
SPEECH AT DARGAVILLE
[Per Press Association.] DARGAVILLE, May 16. The Hon W. Hall-Jones addressed a public meeting last night. Referring to the Main Trunk line, he said that he hoped to see it finished in three years, but he would not promise definitely. He favoured the abolition of the Legislative Council, and regarded the north of Auckland as a fine country for dairying when the timber was cut out. He thought that Ministers should travel about and meet all the people and know their wants. Nest session, he said, legislation would be introduced giving the northern counties a royalty £romi the sales of timber, etc. As New Zealand would ultimately become a great manufacturing centre, the Minister thought that water-power should be harnessed for machinery purposes, etc. He strongly supported the present agreements on the land question. A vote of thanks and an expression of confidence in the Government was carried.
