THE SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT
♦ A HAIRDRESSER AND TOBACCONIST FINED. This morning, at the Magistrate's Court, Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., W. J.) Holmes was charged that, under the Shops and Offices Act, 1904, he had failed to close his 1 shop on April 24, Easter Monday, a special holiday, and had failed to close his shop on Thursday, April 27, t from the hours of 1 p.m. for. the remainder of the day a 6 required by Section 9 for the statutory half-holiday. He was also charged with having failed to grant a halfholiday, under Section 4, to William Le Sueur, an assistant, on April 27, as Thursday was the statutory half-holi-day, and the defendant had failed to grant Le Sueur a half-holiday on April 24 a special holiday. 'The defendant admitted the first charge, and pleaded , not guilty to the second. • Mr J. Shanaghan appeared • for the Labour Department. i ' Frederick Le Sueur said that he rented a saloon from the defendant. He had taken his half-holiday on Tuesday, April 25, from 11 a.m. for the rest of the day. He had served in Holmes' s shop, but had done it rather as a favour. - The defendant said that he did not employ Le Sueur. The latter was in witness's shop on Thursday evening, carrying on business. The second information was dismissed, and on the first charge the defendant was fined 40s and costs, the Magistrate remarking that it was manifestly unfair for one person to keep his shop open with impunity, while other establishments were closed. i' ; :
