The Russian authorities, of course, rigorously concealed all facts as to this, as the ammunition, if any, must have come from Europe, and exposure of the facts would lead to international complications. Well-informed Russians, however, be* lieve that the garrison suffered badly from, want of shells and rifle ammunition, though' it is reported to have had plenty of raw explosives.
