A CHARGE OF PERJURY.
COMMUTED FOR SENTENCE. At the Police Court this morning, before Mr S. P. Andrews, J.P., Mr C. H. Winny, J.P, and Mr W. I. Ballinger, J.P., Harry Atkins, appeared (on remand), charged that on December !29, 1904, at Christchurch, he did commit perjury in evidence given on oath at a coroner's inquest, held by Mr W. R. Haselden, coroner, touching the death of one Harry Atkins, an infant, stating that the deceased was his lawful son, and fcha£ he had been married to its mother ten years previously in England, such statement being known by the said Harry Atkins to be false. Mr Donnelly, who appeared for the accused, stated that his client had no defence, and he asked that he should? be committed at once to the Supreme Court for sentence. Sub-Inspector Dwyer pointed out that Justices had no power to deal with the case, and that it must come before a Stipendiary Magistrate to be dealt with. In conneotipn with the previous case Maria Mabel Findlay (on remand) was charged that on October 14, at Dunedin, she did make a false statement tp.uohing her allaged marriage with one Harry Atkfns for the purpose of being inserted in the register book of births for the district pf Dunedin. Mr Donnelly stated that in this case also, he had no defence to make. The presiding Justices said they had no power to deal with the cases,, and ordered that, they should stand adjourned so as to go before the Stipendiary ifagistrate.
