FATAL BIG GUN ACCIDENT. —i 4
ONE MAF KILLED AND SEVEKAL INJURED. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, November 2. While at target practice at Fort Ballance this morning', the breach block of ai 12---pmiadcr gun blow out, killing one of the gun squad, J. A. Palmer, and wounding nve others H. C. Peterson, J. T. Slines, R. Fordyke, L. F. O'Neill and H. J. Swecmey. Palmer was seiverely injiued in the i-agion of : tjhe cheat and arm and blown several yards. Ihe mishap occurred shortly after eleven o clock, and Palmer died before noon. It is hoped that, all tho others will recover. Palmer was married only a few months ago. Petersen, who is a to the manager of the Wellington electric tramways, is also a married' man, and has been in *<he Artillery for maoiy years. All the other injured men are unmarried. Several rounds had been fired before the accident occurred. The condition of some of the others is serious, but hopes are entertained of their recovery.
