THE BAYAN'S ALLEGED ESCAPE.
DENIAL OF THE REPORT. JAPANESE STRATEGY. THE SIEGE OF PORT ARTHUR. (Received October 5, 9.56 a.m.) ,_ LONDON, October 4. The report that the Bayan had escaped from Port Arthur is denied. The Russians fear that the apparent inactivity of the Japanese means that Generals Qku and Nodzu are successfully masking the transfer of General Kuroki's army to the eastward, with a view to operating on the railway behind Mukden, and turning the positions at Tichling. At Tokio, the Russian stories of reverses at Port Arthur are discredited, as everything indicates a steady Japanese advance.
