An assurance was given that tha necessarj■work would .be. commenced at once, and the case was adjourned till -September 6. A-'filiatiox.— Charles Archibald was ordered to contribute 6s per week towards the support of an illegitimate child. MAiN-TENANCE.—Juhn M'Quinn applied for the variation or cancellation of an order which compelled him to contribute 10s weekly towards the maintenance of his wife. Mr Donnelly appeared in support of the application, 'and Mr Wright opposed it. It ■nas explained that the parties had been separated about- three years previously, and thafc ths husband, who was aged sixty-five years, had made regular payments of 10s 'per week towards the support of his wife until about two months ago. when ill-health rendered him unfit for work. He had property wliich had been sold recently for '£395, and his wife had a section of land valued at about £200. Edward P. Marsh, licensee of the Cave Rock Hotel, said that, to the ■besfc of his ability, he recognised the defendant, aa a man who" was served with a ' glass of liter at his hotel afc^aboufc 3 p.m. on July 31, after he had given an assurance thafc he had jusfc arrived from Christchurch and had had no drink previously in Sumner duiing thafc day. Samuel Brooking, licensee- of tha Sunnier Hotel, stated that the defendant, after stating thafc he was a bona-fide traveller and had not been ssrved with drink at Sumner previously that day, had lieen allowed a glass of liquor on the premises. Constable Hampden gave evidence thafc the defendant had had liquor at the Cave Rock Hotel and afc the Sumner Hotel, and that Stewart, at tho latter hotel,' bad said that he had not been reived with liquor during that afternoon at the Cave Rock Hotel. Mr Cassidy, who appeared for the defendant, submitted that- the evidence offered for the prosecution did not clearly establish the identity of his client vrith the person who had reoeived the liquor, but the Magistrate entered a conviction, and fined the defendant £5.
