reception they gave* to the request of the Avon Improvement League for funds. The committee is in possession of some £700, subscribed by the public for the purpose of improving the river. It has been shown that any scheme of improvement must- be based on certain information, the cost of collecting which is estimated at £150. It might have been supposed that the committee would have been justified in "departing from its original decision to reserve its funds for actual work on the river and voting the money required for preliminary expenses. Alt it did, however, was to- give a grudging promise to find -850 on condition that the local .bodies interested in the river subscribed the balance. • We hops the local bodies will prove a little more generous than the Floral Fete Committee. Meanwhile the public may well inquire how much longer its contributions are to be hung up awaiting the pleasure of the. comarittee..
