Dbtnkenness. — A male first offender pleaded guilty to a charge of having been drunk on the East Belt on July 5, and- was fined* 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Bicycle By-laws.— Far. riding bicycles on the footpath Herbert L. Armitage and Leslie Turvey were each fined 10s and costs.— Charles H. Gilby was convicted on a- charge of having ridden a bicycle across the footpath from Chancery Lane into Cathedral Square, but no fine was imposed. Dbivino Without Lights. — Peter Japsen, who did not appear, was found guilty of having, on July 2, driven a vehicle along Manchester Street at 6.40 p.m. without a light. A fine of 10s and costs was imposed. Dbitino By-laws.— Bert Harrison .pleaded guilty to a charge of having, on June 29, driven a horse and vehicle across the intersection of High and Liohfield Streets at other than a walking pace. The Bench fined the accused 5s and costs. Throwing Stones. — John C. Smith, a Jad, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having, on June 30, tihTown stones in Cambridge Terrace. Constable Jones gave evidence that he saw the lad, with a number of other boys, throwing stones on to the roof of c building. The accused said he threw a handful of peas, out did* not throw stones. The accused was convicted all <i discharged. A Charge Dismissed. — John Giainaan (Mr Donnelly) was charged with having, on June 18, at Rjccarfcom. used obscene language in a public place, to wit, a licensed vehicle plying for hire. The accused pleaded not guilt*-. . After evidence had been given by J. P. Kelly, the driver of tie coach, John Carlton and Freeman Holmes, passengers, Mr Donnelly pointed out that the prosecution had failed to prove that -the vehicle had' been licensed. The Bench held that it was the duty of tie' police to prove that the vehicle waa duly licensed, and dismissed the case.
