A SUMMARY.
The following as a summary of news which did not appear in yesterday's " Star " ;—
The by-election for Devonport resulted in the return of Mr William Benn (Liberal), 6319, against Mr John Jackson (Conservative), 6178.
The Dominion House of Commons has resolved to confine preference to goods imported through Canadian seaports. The decision does not take effeot in the present year.
The closing series Of Sydney wool sales commenced yesterday. The offerings wero light. Bidding was active* ,and prices are firm, reflecting the improved tone of the English market.
The "Pall Mall Gazette" states that Mr Lyttelton has agreed to consider lieutenant Witfon's release when three years of the sentence have been served. This is equivalent to release early in 1905.
The " Daily Telegraph's " Vienna correspondent states that a report has been received from the Consul at Mush that the 'British Minister at Constantinople threatened the Porte with a naval demonstration if the Mush excesses are repeated.
At the adjourned charge, heard afc Sydney, against Dr Volivia, a Zionist minister, for using threatening language to Mr Willis, member of ihe Assembly, during the disturbances in connection with Dowie'a visit, Volivia was fined JEl^and £7 7s costs. Notice of appeal was given.
Sievier, after the warrant had been sent to hift residence,, surrendered at Scotland YaTd. He inquired whether Sir James Duke was paying the costs of the prosecution. When charged -with perjury in connection "with a private examination in bankruptcy in 1898 he declared that he had a perfect answer. Ho was allowed bail in two sureties of £3000 each.
In the Federal House. Mr Watson, in reply to a question, stated that the Cabinet, after exhaustive consideration, bad decided that the Navigation Bill Royal Commission was sufficiently representative, and did not need increasing. Mr Johnson gave notice to move on Thursday that the commeroial and shipping interests should be directly represented on the Commission. ' .
The captain and officers and the Lascar deck crew of the Australia remain aboard. Arrangements, have been made to send the dew Home by the next outgoing steamer. Many local insurance companies have small lines on the cargo, but the bulk is held by Lloyd's, London. It is believed that a considerable portion is damaged. The company's report states that the Vessel 'appears doomed.
