OBITUARY.

MR J. J. HEBRICK. | The death was announced, this morning! of Mr J. J. Herrick, an old 'and respected resident of the Tai Tapu district. Mr Her- , rick was born at Islington, London, in | 1831, £_ad emigrated with his parents iri ' 1842, reaching Nelson in the ship Fifeshire, i on February 1 of that year. In 1852 he visited the Australian gold-diggings, but returned to Nelson a year later, and began ; farming. About 1863 he came to Canter- j •bury, and purchased a farm at Tai Tapu. j In 1875 Mr Herrick purchased the property . known aa "Hill View," on which he re- j sided till the time of his death. In all mat- 1 tors pertaining tb the welfare of the dis- j trict in which he lived Mr Herrick* took ai 1 very keen interest. He was the first store- < keeper at Tai Tapu, and he ran the first mail coach in the distriot. For many years ! he was member and chairman of the | Springs Road Board, and latterly he held a seat on the Tai Tapu Road Board. He served 'on the Lincoln School Committee for fifteen years, being its chairman for five years, and he was also, a member of the Tai Tapu School C-om-n_it.ee for many years.. As a dairyman he was instrumental in the . foundation of the Tai Tapu dairy, factory, and for many yeirs he held a seat on the Board of Directors, He was also a .,' director of the New Zealand Farmers' Co- j operative Association for more than ten" years. Mr Herrick -waa married in 1858 to Miss Hammond, of Nelson, who landed v there in the same year -that he did, and he had a family of eight sons and five daughters. The funeral will probably take place on Friday.,
