first aim of the Government should be to establish native forest preserves in easily accessible places close to towns or on rail- | way and coach 'routes. We agree with him in the main. But there are many obvious difficulties in the way of carrying out his suggestion in its entirety. For instance, the scenic areas in the vicinity of Christchurch that are -worth piieserving' are Limited, and the proportion available is no doubt a great deal smaller. ' Even the £100,000 which the Government has received authority to spend would not go far if it were expended on sites near, say, the large centres. Before very long we hope to .sco it carried out to the extent of converting the Riccarton bush into a public reser-ve.
