A BRAVE POLICEMAN.
» ■ DESPERATE STRUGGLE IN v FRONT' OF A TRAIN. The story of a desperate straggle was told at Wimbledon when Arthur Bavitt was charged with breaking into \ Messrs Waxrington and Co.'s offices at Mertoo. Railway Station, and also with assaulting P. C. James. i The constable, in early hours of the sjnaorning, saw prisoner trying to get into the coal offices. Be went over to .him and the man threw an inkpot at him- and iwi away. The constable gave chase and caught him on the railway metals, where;, in the course of s. struggle, the vassa. and the constable fell against the- buffers of a truck, and struggled on to the other line just as the whistle of an approaching train was heard. The constable's cape got over his hiead, and prisoner exclaimed : "We will die together," but as the train came upon them the constable managed to drag the man off the track, and to overpower him sufficiently to allow himself time to blow his whistle amd summon aid. Prisoner was committed for trial.
