CHARGES AGAINST THE PUBLICANS. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON^ September 4. i The prosecutions of the Newtown hotei- ! keepers on a charge of selling liquor -without licenses came on at the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Dr M'Arfchur, S.M. i Mr Bell appeared for the prosecution and !Mr Skerrett ior the defence. The facts were admitted. Mr Bell said lie assumed that the defence was based on -Section 23 of the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, which provided that where an application for the renewal of a license had been duly made, but not disposed of by the committee on or before the day of expiry of Uie license, the license shall be deemed to t>e extended! until the application for a renewal has been finally disposed of. According to the prosecution, the Licensing Committee did dispose of the application by refusing the renewals, on lihe ground that it had no jurisdiction. Mr Skerrett said the prosecution had anticipated tne defence corTectly, and he proceeded to argue at length thavthe application had not been " finally disposed of." At the close of the legal argument, the Magistrate reserved 1 judgment till Monday.
