SHIP BRAND WORCESTER SAUCE. . 8451 FLOUR, TRUST. / < TRYING TO CRUSH FREE MILLER AND FARMER. THE "Oamaru Mai'J" says: — In connection with the decision of the directors of the New Zealand Flour Millers' Association to further reduce the price of flour, it has leaked out that it was by no means unanimous. It is stated on apparently good authority that the Otago millers oh the Board were desirous of raising the price, and so ending the present destructive tactics, but were outvoted by the Canterbury members, who, it may be remarked, are better placed in the matter of pur-" chasing wheat than are the southern men. It is also alleged that tihe aim is either to compel the free millers to join the ring or to cripple, if not crush, them. Were the priceß of wheat brought into line with the present price of flour t^e position would not be improved for the miters, who are losing money upon every ton of flour they manufacture. Any lowering of ;the cost of wheat would be followed by another reduction in the price of flour, for the majority of the directors^of the Association are clearly determined that those standing out shall either surrender or pay dearly for their liberty. Even within the Association there is a growing feeling of dissatisfaction with the present tactics, and the next meeting of shareholders is" likely to be a particularly lively one. It is said that when the time arrives an effort will be rnad'e to completely change* the composition of the directorate by placing the management of the Association in the hands of business men who are not millers or interested in milling. One ground upon which the change will be advocated is that the directors are placed in a position of advantage over other shareholders by possessing a prior knowledge of any change in prices,' a knowledge which, in the case of a contemplated rise in the price of flour, enables them . to forestall others in the grain' market. It is, however, problematical whether any movement to change the management or tactics of the Association will succeed. The Canterbury millers are~in the majority, and the Otago millers must either remain at their 'mercy or assist in breaking down the combination. Holders of wheat can, however, afford' to view the situation with some degree of complacency. The fact that business in the grain market is seriously restricted because milling is now being carried on at a loss by n<y means implies that wheat must fall. The millers will either have to buy or close their mills, and it will be found that good milling wheat will ultimately find purchasers.
