Holbein made another unsuccessful attempt to swim from Dover to Calais. He was immersed for seventeen hours and twenty minutes t and got within four miles -of thd French coast, -when an adverse current carried hint back four miles, 4 endering the struggle hopeless. The water -was smooth and warm. (Holbein has made three previous efforts to swim the Channel. On his third attempt — made this time last year — he was in the water for twenty-two hours twenty-one minutes, and was taken out when only at mile from his destination.)
