The calendar was a small one, comprising only five cases. Joseph Thomson Daly, aged seventeen, an escapee from, Burnham, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment on each of three charges, two of theft and one of forgery. In a case of indecent assault on a girl under sixteen, his Honor directed the grand jury to ignore the bill, as the prosecution had not been ■commenced within one month of the coiiimission of the offence. ■ INYERCARGILL, June 9. Nicholas Nicholas, aged twenty-seven, was found guilty of horse-stealing^, and sentenced to thirteen months' imprisonment. He served a similar sentence for a like offence in Timaru, some years ago. The crimina.l business has been concluded. • The Supreme Court- is engaged hearing an action for £1100 diamages brought by John Kerr agninst William Mair, a farmer, for breach of contract in regard to the sale of flax growing on his property. The defence is that the work _adl to be carried on continuously, and that for a time operations ceased. The price fixed between the parties was 3s 9d per ton, and plaintiff had a contract to sell which would have left a profit of £7 per ton. The case is proceeding.
