The late .Hon W. Swanson's estate has been valued at £60,000. Itis divided among the members of his family. The Rev Bruce Todd and Colonel Hume arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Rotomaihana this morning. Mr H. W. Lawrence has been appointed Acting Chief Chemist to the Agricultural Department during the absence of Mr B. C. Aston, who left for Europe a fortnight ago, having obtained six months' leave of absence, for the purpose of acquiring knowledge as to the latest methods in analytical chemistry. Tho new Mayor of Auckland, the Honi E. . Mitchelson, is amative of the city of which he has just become Chief Magistrate. He entered Parliament in 1881, and has held portfolios in three Administrations; being Minister of Public Works in. the Atkinson Ministries, from Nov. 23, 1883, to August 16, 1884 ; from August 28, 1884, to Sept. 3, 1884, and from Oct. 8, 1887, to Oct, 17, 1899 ; and was also Minister of Native Af fairs from Oct, 8, .1887, to Jan. 24, 1891 ; Postmaster-General and Electric Telegraph Commissioner from Oct. 17, 1889, to Jan. 24, 1891. Mr John Fuller, jun., the well-known entertainer, is lying in Wellington ill from an attack of congestion df the lungs. Mr John., Eiiller, sen., is going up from Christchurch to take over the management of the Choral Hall during the illness of his son.
