The leaders were arrested and th« pilgrims sent back to their reservations. (The Doukhobors were first heard of in tho middle of the 18th century. They long; endured cruel persecution -in the Caucasus at the hands of the Russian Government. Eventually they emigrated to Canada, where they were granted land in tlte prcjvinces of Assiniboia. The Doukhobor* refused to use animals aa beasts of burden,aiid they also would not eat meat of anykind. They were reduced to a state of hopeless destitution last winter, their pilgrimage through British Columbia treated a great deal of interest at the time, and was only stopped when they were in very sore strait*.)
