The authorities at Saskatchewan hartt rigorously suppressed an attempt to organise a Doukhobor pilgrimage similar to last winter's. The leaders were arrested and th« pilgrims sent back to their reservations. (The Doukhobors were first heard of in tho middle of the 18th century. They long; endured cruel persecution -in the Caucasus at the hands of the Russian Government. Eventually they emigrated to Canada, where they were granted land in tlte prcjvinces of Assiniboia. The Doukhobor* refused to use animals aa beasts of burden,aiid they also would not eat meat of anykind. They were reduced to a state of hopeless destitution last winter, their pilgrimage through British Columbia treated a great deal of interest at the time, and was only stopped when they were in very sore strait*.)
