PERSONAL.
Mr Hugh Ross, of Wanganui, a prominen6 Volunteez" and marksman, and who was one of those who participated in the attack on the Weroroa redoubt in the last Maori war, died in the Wangamui Hospital on Tuesday, after a long illness. Colonel Potter and Lieutenant Browne went to Timaru by this morning's express train to attend th& opening of the new drillshed and presentation to Colonel Bailey.
Mr W. Strange and Mr A. Boyle went south by the express train this morning.
The Rev J. White arrived from Wellington .by the s.s. Rotomahana this morning. Flags were "hoisted at half-mast on the steamers at Lyttelton to-day on account of the death of Captain Babot, marine supers intendent for the Shaw,SavUl arid Albion Company, who died at Wellington. Captain Babot was formerly well known in Lvttelton. as master of the ship Hydaspes. "The Secretary to the South Canterbury Education Board (Major Bamfield) having applied, owing to increasing years, to be relieved of his more responsible* dutiesy the Board has appointed ;Mr A. Bell, assistant inspector., to the position of secretary, at £400 a year. 'Major Bamfield will be assistant secretary, at £200 a year.
