EDISON.

Thomas Edison was fifty-six years old on Feb. il. He was born in Erie, County Ohio. Everybody is acquainted with the story of his early struggles, and how he took his first step up the ladder of fortune as a newsboy on the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, system, in 1859. It was at this period, also, that he wa? posing as an editor of .the " Grand Trunk Herald," a tiny weekly periodical issued from the train on which he travelled. Edison's first patent was a machine for recording votes, and intended by its inventor for use in the State Legislature. It worked too well, for its adoption was refused, on the ground that it did not give sufficient- opportunity to wouldbe orators! One of Edison's most remarkable characteristics is his distaste for, and, indeed, actual dislike of, an invention when once he has completed it. He himself has said, " I have not used a telephone for tenyears, and I would go out of my way any day to avoid an incandescent light."
