"WHAUR'S YER BIBLE."

In 1880 Bret Harte arrived in London on his way to take up his duties as Consul at Glasgow. He was the guest of Various lit<rary and artistic folk living in or around the metropolis, and was a great favourite in tho highest Bohemian circles. His duties very soon called him to Glasgow. His first letter from that Calvinistic city was typical ; he described how he arrived in the dreary gr.yness and dirt, and how uninviting and cold his rooms looked, so that he left his keys for his landlady to unpack, and betook himself to an hotel for dinner. When he came back he found his landlady standing! on the doorstep with arms akimbo, and she said, "I've unpacked yer kists ( chests), and whaur's ver Bible?"
