A SUCCESSFUL THAW.

The latest " indiscretion " of that skirtdancing nobleman, the Karl of Yarmouth, is reported from America, whither he re-, paired tome time ago to fulfil a theatrical engagement as "Mr Eric Hope." One re* suit of his trip is that ho has entered into an engagement of a much more promising character. Ho is* to marry Miss Alice Thaw, youngest daughter of a millionaire iron manufacturer, who died about ten years ago, leaving each of his ten children more than a million dollars. Through her mother, Mr Tha.w's second wife, the Earl's fiancee will inherit a good part of another ten million dollars. Quite recently Mrs Thaw denied her daughter's engagement to the Earl, not approving of American lieircsss " buying titles held by impoverished foreign noblemen." But the match, has, nevertheless, been made. Miss Thaw is a sister of Harry Thaw, Ihe young American blood who startled Paris three years ago by two very remarkable dinners. One he, gave at a cost of 10,000dol, and hired Sousa's Band to play. A few nights later he gave a dinner, which became famous all over Europe as the ''beauty dinner" on account of the celebrated Parisian stage favourites and models that were among his guests. Tho name of tho Earl's fiancee ought to suggest several reasonably good jokes to humourists. The Earl, it will be remembered, was financially "frozen out" ere he crossed tho Atlantic.
