THE FISH TRADE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The public are likely to be misled by the untruths contained in your leader on the Fish Trade. You say there is reason to believe that the explanation has not fitted every ca-se of destruction that has occurred. If you can prove any fishmonger in Christchurch has wilfully destroyed any good fish for the sake of keeping the prices up at any time within the last five years I will donate the sum of £5 to the Christchurch Hospital or H-srrick's Home. You say th« strongest argument for the necessity for a Municipal Fish Market is the hostility of the fish trade to its organisation. This last is the biggest untruth of all, as'' the fishmongers as a body are wishing for the Council to build a market for the sale of fish, and, as to myself, thr-ee years ago I wrote to the City Council offering to pay £20 a year for three years as a guarantee against any loss the Council should have, if they would erect * fish market and take control of the sale of fish. I received a reply that my offer would be born© in mmd 1 , but that they had ! no power to take the markets over. As to the truth of this you can find cut from the Council yourself. To prove I am sincere I now publicly make an offer andi agree to pay £30 a .year for three years against, any loss the Council should have if they erect a Municipal Fish Market, but only on condition that the Council compels the auctioneers to sell tSheir fish only in that market. As Councillor Samuels Eeems to think fishmongering is such a money -making and easy business, I should be most pleased if foe or. anyone- else would take my place over and simply pay me what the place- has cost me. — I am> etc., High Street.
